Chopper crewman to take on Kokoda

ROGER Fry is denying it was a mid-life crisis, but he will admit it’s the closest he has ever come to one.

The chief crewman for Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter turned 50 in March and decided he wanted to walk the Kokoda Track.

“I wouldn’t say turning 50 was so much a shock for me, it’s just that I don’t feel 50,” Mr Fry said.

“In the rescue industry I’ve had to maintain a level of fitness that most blokes my age don’t have.

“I’m just as fit today as I was when I was 25.

“I even drive my kids mad because I’ve got more energy than them.”

Mr Fry said he had spoken to others who had walked the Track and the one thing they warned him to do was “prepare yourself”.

“I know this is going to be physically and mentally challenging, but that’s just what I wanted,” he said.

“I looked at a few different things I could have done, but I thought Kokoda was the perfect choice for a challenge now that I’m 50.

“Three of my brother in-laws are also turning 50 this year, so I’ve told them they’re coming along too.”

Mr Fry is using his “mid-life crisis” adventure to raise funds for the rescue helicopter, and he wants other like-minded adventurers to join him.

Trekkers will be away for 12 days (including travel to and from Port Moresby) from Sunday, August 15.

Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter is looking for 20-30 people to join Roger on the trek – and they don’t need to be having a mid-life crisis.

Enquiries about the trip can be made by phoning Andy Stewart on 6627 4444.

Places need to be confirmed by June 15.
