Clan ready for Highland fling

CABER toss, 74kg farmer’s carry, hammer throw, kilted dash, log wrestle, putting the stone – good luck Clan McCracken.

“I hope that’s all of them. I’m getting tired just thinking about it,” team member Scott Morschel laughed.

This weekend the six-man squad, which trains under Phil Kelly at Yamba’s Main Beach, will compete in Maclean’s Highland Games. The youngest team member is 36.

“We are a group of older guys who do weights and general fitness,” Morschel said.

“This is just a bit of fun to give us something to shoot towards.

“I think it was something that Phil liked the sound of and we were all dumb enough to say yes.”

And with nicknames like Lethal, Kiwi, Caesar and the Stig, Clan McCracken fancies its chances.

Not of winning – just finishing.

“We’ll go in pretty much all of the games’ events that we can,” Morschel said.

“I have no idea how we’ll go,” he said.

“I don’t think we will embarrass ourselves though.

“If you don’t have a goal you just plod along and don’t work as hard.”

As for when any of the squad last competed in these sort of events, Morschel summed it up: “Not for a very long time.”
