Clarence the BMX Cougar thrills young riders
The kids at the Clarence Valley BMX track in South Grafton had a surprise visitor last Saturday when Clarence the Cougar dropped in for a while.
The cougar is the Clarence Valley BMX Club's mascot and it looks like we will be seeing a lot more of this crazy cougar in the future.
Clarence spent some time playing with the young BMX riders before giving some advice to riders up at the start hill.
Like everyone last Saturday Clarence the cougar went looking for water as it was one of those hot dry windy days in the valley with a few fires raging in the distance making the sun look like a red ball in the sky.
Once racing got started it was on for young and old with riders ranging in age from 5 to 49 years old all having ago at BMX racing.
The clubs newest riders are showing no fear as they learn how to race amongst a group of other riders, which is a lot different from riding around the track by yourself.
Learning new skills and competing in a race can sometimes bring out the nerves in both the riders and their parents, but the nerves were soon forgotten after a couple of races and replaced with smiles as the riders came back for a drink and a rest in between races.
As the afternoon went on the temperature started to drop which give everyone a bit of relief from the heat.
Training and gate practice will be held next Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 pm and the club will be racing again next Saturday.
Everyone is welcome too come a long and have a look at BMX racing and to find out more information at the BMX track on the corner of Abbott and Vere Streets in South Grafton.
