Clive Palmer in heartfelt tribute to late mum

CLIVE Palmer has penned a loving tribute to his mother Nancy, describing her as "an incredible lady motivated by love and forgiveness".

Mrs Palmer died "peacefully" late Wednesday night.

"We all only have one mother and I will miss mine dearly," Mr Palmer said in a statement.

"She is much loved by her grandchildren Michael, Emily, Mary, my sister's son Clive and newly-born grandchild Lucy, who she cradled in her arms just last week.

"Many of my fellow Australians who have lost loved ones will understand the grief I am feeling.

"It is a sobering reminder to all of what is important in life, which is to care about those around us and to understand that in the final analysis, we all have more in common than we realise."

Mrs Palmer was born in Tasmania in 1923 but moved to Melbourne at age 17 to work in a munitions factory.

"It was hard and dangerous work where casualties were common," Mr Palmer said.

"However, my mother was inspired by her uncle who died fighting for Australia in the First World War."

She married husband George in the early 1940s, had a daughter in 1945 and gave birth to Mr Palmer in 1954.

"My mother taught me many things: most importantly, how to stand up for myself and not to fear doing what I thought was the right thing at the right time.

"To my mother, courage and service to others were the most important attributes," the millionaire businessman, Fairfax MP and leader of the Palmer United Party said.

"She was a strong believer that the content of a person's character was more important than material possessions," he said. "She had a long and productive life filled with travel and wonderful experiences that taught her we are all citizens of the world.

"As time went by, my mother grew very optimistic and invigorated about what the future held for all Australians.

"She was to me and to all who knew her an incredible lady motivated by love and forgiveness."
