Closing time for Mackellys

FOR their 98th birthday, Mackellys will be celebrating in a very different way, by closing their doors forever.

Retiring director Andrew Kelly has mixed feelings about closing the business, however he says that the closure was inevitable.

“My sons have all taken the opportunity to have careers in things outside retail, so the tradition of handing down the business could not go on,” Mr Kelly said.

As a part of the closure, all stock must go, so people can expect to grab a bargain today when the shop opens its doors at 9am.

People will buy a bag for varying prices during the day and will then have the opportunity to fill it with a range of stock.

“I did the sums on Wednesday morning and we still had $85,000 worth of stock in the shop. I’m in the retail game and I could not believe we had that much,” Mr Kelly said.

“We have been steadily discounting items since we announced the closure in late January.

“What we can be sure of though is that people will be getting some really great deals and the early bird will most definitely get the worm.”

Once the dors of the iconic Grafton department store have closed, Andrew is hoping to fill the space his family owns with a business as soon as possible.

“Ideally I would like to see someone with a retail compatibility take up the space.

“My ultimate aim is to have someone go in there that will keep the street moving and help the existing businesses. Vacant space helps no-one.”

Andrew is also thankful that the majority of his staff has managed to find alternative employment.

“We have a fairly extensive staff, most of who have been with us for years and are more like family.”

Anyone who has worked for Mackellys or Surface to Air during the 98 years they have been open are welcome to attend a closing function to be held in the Grafton store from 4pm today.
