LNP outlines media reforms abolishing ownership rule

THE Turnbull government hopes it will secure Labor's support to abolish the "two out of three" media ownership rule as part of wider reforms to the sector.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield confirmed yesterday the government would introduce the reforms today in an effort to pass them during the March sittings.

The changes would abolish the two out of three rule on ownership in a given radio footprint and the rule that prevents media companies from owning more than 75% of media outlets in one region.

Although Labor has voiced support for abolishing the 75% ownership rule, it is still undecided on the two out of three rule, despite Senator Fifield saying the package needs to be passed in full.
