Coast's Jodie Kenny wins gold with Hockeyroos
A late goal by Sunshine Coast's Jodie Kenny helped Australia avoid one of the biggest chokes in Commonwealth Games history and claim gold in the women's hockey final.
The Australians, who had dominated the tournament and breezed to the final with a 7-1 win over South Africa, were trailing 1-0 before Kenny hit an equaliser with 14 seconds remaining.
The Hockeyroos regained their composure in the penalty shootout and claimed the gold medal with a 3-1 win.
But the medal game was by far Australia's biggest test in a campaign that always appeared destined to end with glory.
Kenny, who grew up playing on the Coast, scored nine goals in four pool matches and individual hat-tricks in back-to-back games.
None of those was as important as the one she provided from a penalty corner with 14 seconds remaining in the decider.
The 26-year-old missed on her point blank opportunity in the penalty shootout but her teammates were able to make amends and secure victory.
