ONE of the two men charged with the one-punch attack that killed Sunshine Coast teenager Cole Miller believes he is "not naturally a violent person".

Nine News is reporting Daniel Jermaine Lee Maxwell, 21, told the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday via a bail application that he is not a heavy drinker and is rarely violent.

"I am not naturally a violent person," the application states.

"I have difficulty explaining my actions on that particular evening."

Cole's death sent shockwaves through his hometown community on the Sunshine Coast.

The 18-year-old died after suffering severe brain trauma following an attack as he walked through Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in early January.

Although he grew up on the Coast, he went to school in Brisbane as he rose through the ranks as a star water polo player.

He was recently promoted to the Queensland Academy of Sport as a scholarship holder and had already represented the state in the Under-20s National Championships and at the World Club Challenge in Sydney.

Maxwell is accused of striking the teenager while drinking with co-accused Armstrong Renata.

Maxwell said he barely knows Renata.

Both Maxwell and Renata are charged with "unlawful striking causing death", a specific law introduced to target coward punches.

Police have previously alleged that shortly before the attack, Maxwell turned to his group of friends and said "Do you see something funny?" before confronting Mr Miller and throwing a punch.
