COMEDIAN Tim Minchin has called on Cardinal George Pell to "come home" to Australia and face questioning on what he knew about the sexual abuse inflicted by the church in Ballarat.

On Tuesday, the singer released his charity single Come Home.

In it, he sympathises with the Cardinal who he understands is "feeling blue" but that the Cardinal needs to come home and be questioned by the Royal Commission.

The money from the single will be donated to a crowdfunding initiative created by Meshel Laurie and Gorgi Coghlan to fly victims of abuse to Roma to confront Cardinal Pell in person.

The fundraiser has already generated $63,260.

The song debuted on Ten's The Project on Tuesday night.

Mr Minchin's track tells Cardinal Pell to "just get on a plane".

We all want you to come home Cardinal Pell, I know you're not feeling well, and being crook ain't much fun, even so we think you should

"Come home Cardinal Pell, come down from your citadel, it's just the right thing to do, we have a right to know what you knew."

The song soon takes a more direct line of attack Cardinal Pell, calling him "scum", a "pompous buffoon" and telling him "I personally believe that those who cover up abuse should go to prison".

The response on social media was swift - with the singing comedian inundated with praise for demanding Cardinal Pell return.

But guest host and broadcaster Steve Price was less impressed, calling the attack "disgusting".

Obviously, Tim Minchin feels really strongly about that, but I just think it is really disgusting the way he has resorted to personal abuse of George Pell," Mr Price said.

"He has called him a coward, scum and a buffoon.

"Now this guy is the most senior Australian Catholic in the world. He is a Cardinal, regardless of what you make of him.

"To use your talent to just simply abuse someone from a distance, I think it is pathetic."
