The Commonwealth challenges ACT's marriage equality laws

THE FIRST official hearing of the Commonwealth's challenge to the Australian Capital Territory's laws on marriage equality was heard today.

While federal Attorney-General George Brandis has been tight-lipped about his specific intentions for the challenge, the ACT is already preparing to change the new Act if need be.

The ACT's new laws were passed on Tuesday, but Territory A-G Simon Corbell said the ACT Government was prepared to re-draft them to avoid future challenges.

A directions hearing for the case is expected to be held this afternoon.
