Controversial Liberace biopic takes home top Emmys

IT WAS too risqué for American cinemas, but Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic is the big winner of today's Primetime Emmy Awards.

Aired as a telemovie on HBO in the US, Behind the Candelabra took home three awards including Outstanding Miniseries or Movie and Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries.

Michael Douglas beat his co-star Matt Damon for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries for his portrayal of the flamboyant entertainer.

List of nominees, with winners in bold

Fans of drug-lab drama Breaking Bad are sure to be up in arms after the drama series' stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul both failed to take home Emmys for Outstanding Lead and Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, losing out to Jeff Daniels for The Newsroom and Bobby Cannavale for Boardwalk Empire.

But the series did take home the coveted award for Outstanding Drama Series.

House of Cards, the first internet TV series to be up for an Emmy, surprisingly received just one award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Modern Family continued its reign in the comedy stakes, taking home its fourth-straight award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Vote for Emmy fashion

Stephen Colbert's parody news show The Colbert Report finally broke The Daily's Show's 10-year winning streak, taking home gongs for Outstanding Variety Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

Speaking of funny men, The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons took home his third Emmy for the role of Sheldon Cooper in the geeky sitcom.

While there were moving tributes to Sopranos star James Gandolfini and Glee star Cory Monteith, who both passed away unexpectedly this year, fans took to Twitter to lament the mere passing reference to late Dallas star Larry Hagman.
