‘Big Show’ heroics sees Coutts through in last ball thriller

NIGHT CRICKET: For Coutts Crossing's Corey Kempshall it was a classic case of redemption as he bowled his side to victory in the Cleaver Night Cricket semi-final on Wednesday night.

Kempshall was initially brought into the attack straight after drinks with South Services behind the eight-ball on 2 for 47 chasing 144. But he was immediately dragged out of the attack when he proceeded to bowl no less than eight wides in his first over - and few predicted skipper Bill North would throw him the ball again.

But as Craig Cole (35) and Brendan Cleaver (34) charged towards the total - getting the equation down to 41 off 42 balls with seven wickets in hand - Kempshall was given another crack in a final throw of the dice for Coutts.

Not another wide later Kempshall dismissed both danger men and took 5 for 26, rattling the stumps off the last ball to win by one run.

Earlier Coutts won the toss and batted, but the decision immediately backfired with Brendan Cleaver taking two wickets in his opening over.

But North (27) and Luke Cox (72) steadied the ship with a 77-run 4th wicket partnership before the middle order worked the total to 144.

Opening bowler Zac Page (1 for 4 off 5) restricted Souths early and their run chase continued to be under pressure until Kempshall's 14-ball over released the valve.

Coutts now have a collective shot at redemption when they take on Harwood, who defeated them by seven runs in the final 12 months ago. Similar to Souths, Coutts had victory in their sights before a late meltdown.

The 30-over per side clash starts at 5.45pm. Entry is free with full canteen facilities in operation.
