Country music favourite Adam Brand is cooking up a storm

IF YOU happen to dine at one of Adam Brand's two restaurants, then don't be surprised if the Golden Guitar winner serves up your order.

When he's not on the road touring or in the studio recording his next album, the 44-year-old lends a helping hand at his Brandys Restaurants in Townsville and Coffs Harbour.

He currently splits his time between the two locations and his Gold Coast home.

"I'm a total foodie. If I wasn't going to be a singer I was going to be a chef," Brand told APN.

"I grew up around my Italian grandmother's cooking and my father born in Sicily so there was always an emphasis on food around the dinner table.

"When I'm not on the road I'm here at the restaurant helping in the kitchen or serving someone their dinner."

This month though, Brand hangs up the apron to continue his My Side of the Street Tour, showcasing his 10th studio album.

"I love being on stage with my band and just having it live, loud and sweaty," he said.

"This album definitely reflects that. It's a very band-oriented album."

My Side of the Street follows his My Acoustic Diary album, Brand's first release with new record label ABC Music.

"The last few years my songwriting head hasn't been totally screwed on that great, so what I did with this album is I've had a lot of songs in my back pocket that I've been saving for a rainy day," he said.

"I've been waiting for the right time to record some of these songs and it felt like it was the right time.

"It came together really naturally… I was in the right head space and heart space."

Pint-sized country singer Jasmine Rae, who features on the song Quit This Time, performs as Brand's special guest on the current tour.

"I became aware of Jasmine more so the past couple of years," he said.

"We spent a bit of time together at a couple of festivals. She sings like an angel. She has an incredible voice and she's also just a great person."

Fans might get a greater insight into Brand's love of food if the pilot of his TV show takes off.

"I'm working with a production company on a cooking show at the moment," he said.

"I love cooking pastas and a lot of fresh fish; everything's got to be fresh. There's nothing better than catching fresh fish and then cooking them up. It's about lifestyle. You've got to be somewhere where you enjoy the climate and the area. Obviously Townsville and Coffs are a long way apart, but they're both great parts of the world."

Adam Brand plays the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough tonight and C.EX Coffs Harbour on Saturday.
