Country-style birthday bash for Leyburn Royal Hotel

COMPLETE with a heavy horse display, woodchopping competitions, country music and a sheep dog display, the Leyburn Royal Hotel's 150th birthday party was as country as they come.

The hotel is the oldest continually licensed premises in Queensland and today's building still incorporates the original premises.

Former Broncos player and rugby league legend Shane Webcke has owned the pub for the past 15 years.

Mr Webcke said owning a pub now was not as easy has it would have been 150 years ago.

"I am very proud of the pub," he said.

"But it has been hard to run.

"Pubs are not what they used to be and hotels and pubs have had to change the way they operate.

"We have worked really hard. We are not just a pub, but a restaurant and a place with great entertainment as well."

People came from all around to check out the festivities on Saturday.

The Pomfrett family travelled from Toowoomba to take a look at the historic club and for the chance to bump into Mr Webcke.

Kevin Bland travelled from Brisbane.

"I am an ex-local from Millmerran and I saw the 150th birthday of the pub advertised and thought I'd come and have a look," he said.

"So far it has been a great afternoon."

Mr Webcke said it was great to see so many faces.

"It has been a really great turnout," he said.

Mr Webcke had planned to take part in the woodchopping and sheep shearing competitions but an injury meant he had to watch from the sidelines.

"I have severed a tendon in my foot," he said.

"It isn't too painful - more of an inconvenience and bad timing."

A lot of planning went into the event and Mr Webcke said it would not have gone smoothly without the help of hotel manager Craig Savage.
