Court rules sackings at North Goonyella mine were illegal

A FEDERAL Court has ruled mining giant Peabody's sacking of three workers at North Goonyella mine was illegal.

In a decision last week Justice Logan said Peabody had taken deliberate and concerted action to dismiss the three workers for lawful union activity - a move that was out of line with Australian industrial relations traditions and democratic values.

The three workers, who are union workplace representatives, will return to work at the North Goonyella mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin next week.

CFMEU Mining and energy district president Stephen Smyth said the decision was a win for all Australian workers.

"This is a powerful reminder of the right of Australian workers to be actively represented by their unions when it comes to safety and conditions," Mr Smyth said.
