Coutts firebrands set up first innings victory

COUTTS V GDSC EASTS: The faultless cricketing wisdom that line and length produces results could not have proven truer as Coutts Crossing pace duo Adam Elliott and Zac Page tore through GDSC Easts at Ulmarra Showground to set up a first innings victory on day one.

While it was Page who took most of the spoils the weekend before, Elliott was not going to let his partner in crime take all the glory again as he kept the ball on a dime on his way to a second five wicket haul for the season.

While the pitch laid on the sloping edge of the square at Ulmarra produced a few headaches in the run up of the seamers, they were only casuing more for the batsmen as Elliott managed to cut the ball back in from outside the off peg.

"Balls were landing a good metre or so outside off and managing to just miss the top of middle," CRCA umpire Terry Hickson said.

"The slant of the wicket would have helped him a bit but he really was ripping them back in."

It was another case of the seam duo sharing the spoils with Elliott (6 for 33 off 17) and Page (4 for 44 off 12.1) ensuring Easts were strangled to 106 off 33.1 overs despite the best efforts of captain Ben Hill (34) and a returning Brad Robertson (23) at opener.

With more than half a day still to play at Ulmarra, Coutts went in to bat chasing quick runs as they aimed at claiming a first innings result on day one.

But it was Easts celebrating early as opener Tim Tilse walked back to the sheds on a duck egg.

But the celebrations would be short lived as the patience and power of Bill North (51) and Luke Cox (54) took over the proceedings.

North was a sound head as Cox bashed 10 boundaries from the opposite end as the pair put on a solid 81-run second wicket stand.

North then continued the dominance with the bat in a 70-run stand with young gun Eli Fahey (28) to see the side cruise past Easts total on day one giving Coutts ample time to aim for an outright.
