Cowboys to remember former star

CANCER has claimed one of the heroes of North Queensland Cowboys’ run to the NRL finals in 2007.

Forward Sam Faust, 26, the father of three children, died at Townsville yesterday of acute myeloid leukaemia which was diagnosed in 2009.

Faust made his NRL debut in round 10 of the 2007 season and played in the five straight victories to end that home and away season and in the Cowboys’ three finals appearances.

Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said yesterday he would always have fond memories of the young forward.

“Sam is probably best remembered for our run into the finals in 2007 when he helped to get us to within one game of the grand final,” Parr said.

“He was always a very popular member of our team and was well respected and liked by all of his teammates, as well as the coaching staff.”

The former Brahmans junior was born in Proserpine and played 24 NRL games in 2007 and 2008.

Both Cowboys CEO Peter Jourdain and Parr paid tribute to him yesterday.

Jourdain said Faust’s passing was a very sad day for the Cowboys and the rugby league community.

“Sam was a talented young footballer and a fine young man,” Jourdain said.

“I know everyone connected with our club, and with rugby league in general, will be saddened by this news.

“The club passes on its condolences on to Sam’s family and friends for their loss.

“We would also like to thank everyone who has helped with raising funds for Sam’s medical treatment since he received his diagnosis.”

In recent months there had been a big push amongst NRL players and the rugby league community to raise money for Faust to travel to the US for medical treatment.

The North Queensland Cowboys will pay tribute to Faust at their home game against the Roosters this Saturday.
