Creating the right business path

PEOPLE who make a living from creative industries across the Clarence Valley - and those who want to become involved - are being offered help in how to properly handle the financial side of their enterprises.

Clarence Valley Council has invited the Australian Film, Television and Radio School to Grafton Regional Gallery in November to conduct the essential small business course called Running Your Own Creative Business.

Council general manager Scott Greensill described the course as ideal for anyone running a small business or interested in joining the growing industry of creative opportunities.

"Whether you are an artist, designer, animator or just interested in creative self-employment, Running Your Own Creative Business is absolutely essential for those seeking a successful career in the creative industries," Mr Greensill said.

"The one-day course will include topics on how to set up a creative business, difficult aspects of self-employment including financial management, two legal essentials for creative businesses - copyright and contracts - and creative marketing campaigns."

The course will be conducted by experienced tutor Monica Davidson, who has a long and distinguished career as a successful freelance director and writer.

Monica regularly conducts popular and well-regarded courses on freelancing and is the author of Freelancing for Australians for Dummies, published in 2008.

She says the course is a rare opportunity for the Clarence Valley community to take advantage of a specialised creative business course conducted in their own region.

Running Your Own Creative Business will take place on November 17 at Grafton Regional Gallery from 9am to 5pm. The course costs $55 with prepaid bookings essential. Call the Grafton Regional Gallery on 6642 3177.

COURSE GOALS

Monica believes that by the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Manage their finances more effectively

Understand tax as it applies to a creative business

Gain familiarity with basic contracts and copyright laws

Learn how to market their services effectively and efficiently

Understand the importance of applying business principles to their creative work.
