CRIME TIME: Youths break into club twice to steal alcohol
A: South Grafton
A 36-year-old South Grafton man has been charged with shoplifting after a speargun was taken from the BCF store on Iolanthe St, South Grafton. It is alleged that on March 15 the man entered the BCF store, removed a speargun from a rack and placed it down the front of his pants before exiting the store, having made no attempt to pay for the item. The incident was captured on CCTV footage. Two days later the suspect was stopped by police on Bent St, South Grafton. He has been charged with shoplifting and is due to appear before the Grafton Local Court on April 9.
B: South Grafton
On March 17 police conducting proactive patrols in the South Grafton area stopped a Queensland-registered vehicle for the purpose of a random breath test. While searching the vehicle police located an amount of the prohibited drug ice in a backpack belonging to the driver, a 27-year-old Queensland man. The man was issued a field court attendance notice for the offence of possess prohibited drug. He is due to appear before Grafton Local Court on April 4.
Grafton Local Court issued eight warrants on March 17 for the arrest of a 14-year-old male. The teenager was sighted at Grafton Shopping World on March 18 and arrested by police and returned to Grafton Police Station where the eight warrants were executed. The male was refused bail and will appear before Grafton Local Court on April 14.
D: South Grafton
A 14-year-old South Grafton boy is due to appear in Grafton Children's Court following an incident at the South Grafton Ex-Services Club on March 19. The 14-year-old and another male allegedly damaged a sliding door and gained entry to the club before removing between 10 and 20 cans of pre-mixed alcoholic beverages from a fridge. The males then left through the same damaged door via which they had entered. Police were called and CCTV footage viewed. The 14-year-old was immediately identified. A short time later police were again called to the South Grafton Ex-Services Club after an alarm was activated. Upon arrival, the two male offenders were seen running from the vicinity of the club. After a brief chase on foot, the 14-year-old male was apprehended by police. He was searched and found to be in possession of a screwdriver which police will allege is what he used to gain entry to the club. It was later established that during the second break and enter approximately 60 cans and bottles of various types of pre-mixed alcoholic beverages were stolen. The 14-year-old male was charged with aggravated break and enter, two counts of commit serious indictable offence, and possess housebreaking implements. He is due to appear before Grafton Children's Court on April 14.
E: South Grafton
On March 20 police responded to a call an intoxicated and abusive male at an Armidale Rd, South Grafton address. When police arrived the male was seen to be heavily intoxicated but he did not appear to be directing his abuse towards anyone in particular. Police spoke to the man, advising him about his behaviour before leaving. A short time later the male walked to a nearby residence on Ellen St, South Grafton where he picked up a piece of concrete and threw it at a window causing it to break. Police were again called. The male was located on the footpath at the intersection of Armidale Rd and Ellem St, South Grafton. He was holding a wooden axe handle. He walked towards police and it was evident that he was heavily intoxicated. He was called upon to drop the axe handle and did so without further incident. He was arrested and charged.
