Court hears woman thought cannabis seedlings were vegetables

A 52-year-old Back Creek woman was more concerned about posing for her mugshot than being convicted of drug charges.

Katherine Turnbull appeared before Murwillumbah Court on Wednesday, pleading guilty to cultivating and possessing cannabis.

Tweed Police went to Turnbull's home on November 21, following a tip-off from CrimeStoppers, and discovered 13 small cannabis plants growing in individual pots.

Despite making an admission to police that the plants were for personal use, in court Turnbull denied she knew they were cannabis, indicating she thought they were vegetables instead.

Magistrate Jeff Linden was sceptical of Turnbull's claims.

"CrimeStoppers were told there was cannabis at the location and gee-whiz, guess what they found," he said.

"It's been illegal for over 30 years. You're not going to tell me you didn't know?"

Turnbull said she "just forgot about them" and noted the plants were only 10-15cm tall.

Magistrate Linden was unimpressed, saying Turnbull was "blasé about the whole thing".

"Small plants tend to get bigger, funnily enough," he said.

Magistrate Linden convicted Turnbull and sentenced her to a year-long good behaviour bond, mentioning she would be taken to Murwillumbah Station to provide a photo and fingerprints.

"But I'm not very photogenic," Turnbull protested.

The Magistrate shot Turnbull a baffled look before she was led out of the courtroom muttering under her breath.

"The officer said I was only going to get a warning," she said.

The cannabis plants were destroyed by police.
