Crunch time closing in

CHEESECAKE and chairs kept council candidates occupied outside the returning office on Grafton's Prince St yesterday.

The would-be councillors have spent days and hours handing out how-to-vote cards to pre-pollers, and returning officer Cliff Mitchell said a couple of thousand voters had already made their choice.

Election day is on Saturday and Mr Mitchell's top tip for voters is to carefully read the information at the top of their ballot paper.

"They have to vote for at least half of the councillors that need to be elected," he said.

"So in the case of Clarence Valley, that's five."

Coverage

When the doors of polling places close on Saturday, the big count will start, with each place phoning through results to the returning office that night until about 11pm, then again if necessary on Sunday morning.

Results will be put straight onto the Electoral Commission website and there will be updates at both dailyexaminer.com.au and on our Facebook page.

The Daily Examiner will visit the returning office on Saturday night and will have full coverage in Monday's print edition.
