Curtain call for 1965 Dodge Hearse as exotic lands beckon

IT CAN fit ladders, tools, all the surfboards you want and it's a real head turner.

A Sunshine Coast woman is offering her work vehicle for sale, a 1965 Dodge Phoenix Hearse.

Signwriter Vick Pattison has used the hearse as her daily drive for years and said it had been better than a ute.

"I used to have a ute. I've had tonneau covers but with the hearse, you can put everything in and drop the back and it's safe," she said.

Ms Pattison had been planning to buy an old utility when a friend offered her the hearse, which had been sitting in a shed for 30 years after being used as a funeral car in Sydney.

"People say, 'how did you find it?' but she found us," Ms Pattison said.

She was initially reluctant to buy it but then realised it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

She dubbed the car Holly, after Holly Golightly in her favourite movie, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and painted it black with pin-up girls on the bonnet.

Ms Pattison has decided to sell Holly for $12,000 to take an overseas holiday and then focus on a career as an artist but it is a regretful sale.

"There will be some tears when she does drive away for the last time."

She said the hearse had a personality of its own but was a smooth drive.

"It's only three foot longer than a car - about the same as an F-truck," she said.

"The turning circle is not tight but we haven't met a car park yet that we couldn't negotiate."

Ms Pattison said the hearse's previous passengers had never worried her.

"Even if you did believe spirits could come back and haunt you, they're not going to come back and haunt the funeral director's car - they're going to rattle the chains at the mother-in-law's"
