Cuts will hurt schools: Garrett

SLASHING $1.7billion for the NSW education budget will impact schools around the country, Federal Education Minister Peter Garrett has warned.

Following a meeting with NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli in which he called on the State Government to reverse last week's job cuts decision, Mr Garrett said the changes would result in less money being available to all government and non-government schools.

He said the Federal Government would continue to fight the planned reforms which Mr Piccoli claimed would still follow the school-funding model outlined in the Gonski Review.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell maintained the cuts, which will take place over the next four years, were necessary to deal with the loss of GST revenue.

He and Treasurer Mike Baird have called for a debate about whether a GST rate hike is necessary to relieve economic pressure.
