Cyclists to face moment of truth
THEY call the event the “race of truth”.
Now Grafton Cycle Club’s Trevor Creighton will be able to find out who’s pulling their weight when his club takes part in the Mauri Kautto Teams Time Trial tomorrow.
Running for about 13 years, the race will pit teams of five riders against up to 25 rival sides across a 100km journey.
“The idea is the team will ride together but independent of the other teams,” Creighton said.
“What sets the time trial apart is that there are not many of these at the amateur level.
“Time trials are called the races of truth.
“You can’t hide. You can’t sit behind another rider.”
Creighton expected the 2hr 17min course record to be nudged by the quality field.
This is despite a slight change to the course due to roadworks.
But it just means a little bit more “methodical and mechanical” preparation is required by the riders in the open, masters and women’s categories.
“There’s certainly a couple of teams that will go somewhere near it (the record),” Creighton said.
Riders set off from Turf Street at 9am, with all invited to the club’s barbecue.
