Academy seeking top talent

THE North Coast Academy of Sport (NCAS) is seeking junior athletes from the North Coast who are interested in competitive road and track cycling.

Endorsed by Cycling NSW, the program will see about 20 cyclists selected by a combination of identification testing and previous results and performances with some places being allocated to known talented cyclists via nomination from North Coast clubs.

Three areas will be holding selection trials on the following dates:

Port Macquarie – May 21 (exact location and time TBA)

Coffs Harbour – May 22 (exact location and time TBA)

Ballina – May 28 (exact location and time TBA)

The program is currently underpinned by cycling clubs at Port Macquarie, Macksville, Coffs Harbour, Grafton and Ballina.

Coaches from each club will work with the selected squad members in their area to ensure they have a safe and supervised coaching program. We are hoping to also engage the remaining north coast cycling clubs to ensure all regions have similar support.

Outside of the intensive training camps, NCAS cycling squad members will work with their local club coach/NCAS satellite coach to keep developing their skills in the sport.

Athletes considering applying must be born between 1993 and 1999, will need to live within the north coast region of NSW and currently be a member of a north coast cycle club or willing to join one before the first camp in June.

We encourage all interested age eligible athletes to apply and ask new cyclists who successfully gain a place in the program be willing to gain at least 10 hours cycling experience before the first camp.

As well as looking for existing junior cyclists, who already have competitive cycling experience, NCAS is also working with the cycling clubs on the north coast to assist with the development of interested athletes. With leadership from the club and following a carefully structured development program, athletes new to the sport will be introduced to cycling by learning the fundamentals of equipment, bike handing, cycle maintenance and road safety before progressing to beginner and then intermediate performance coaching.

Visit or phone 66203073. Applications to trial close 5pm Monday, May 9.
