VIDEO: Resident slams "irresponsible" cycling
DOWNRIGHT dangerous is how Rockhampton's Mal Golightly describes a video of a cyclist riding down the Mt Morgan range.
The video, shot from a handlebar camera, shows the rider overtaking other cyclists and, at times, crossing double white lines.
After watching the video, Mr Golightly contacted The Morning Bulletin, describing the actions of the cyclist as "irresponsible and reckless".
The video was posted on YouTube by Cyclology Bicycle Education and Coaching.
Mr Golightly said the behaviour of the rider in the video was a "poor example" to set for children and teenagers learning to cycle.
"It's the epitome of hypocrisy and it's just an irresponsible and dangerous example to be setting," he said.
But qualified Rockhampton cycling coach and owner of Cyclology Brett Ruff hit back at those claims.
"There was nothing unsafe about it," he said.
Mr Ruff said videos like the one posted to YouTube were examples to his students of what to do, and what not to do, on the road.
"(The video) does show a range of skills involved in cycling," he said.
Mr Ruff also said it was legal for motorists and cyclists to cross double white lines, where safe, to overtake slow vehicles.
He said the rider in the video would not have been exceeding the 40kmh limit.
"We're not condoning breaking the law, but there is room for allowances either way," Mr Ruff said.
"You have to understand the circumstances before you judge right or wrong."
