DEX beets Facebook in food producer's vegetable search

THE Daily Examiner works better than Facebook for Clarence food producer Peter Nicholson.

About 18 months ago Mr Nicholson began posting on Facebook searching for a local gardener or grower to supply him with beetroot for his multi-award winning beetroot finishing vinegar.

But in that time, the owner of Yamba-based business Nicholson Fine Foods had not received a single inquiry.

The story changed last week when The Daily Examiner published his quest on its front page.

Overnight Mr Nicholson was flooded with offers, with up to 10 local growers offering to supply him.

COMMENT: Foodie's success shows local news still matters

"We have a number of people excited about the possibility of supplying us with beetroots," he said.

There was also a bonus for his business, which specialises in creating high quality, niche foods.

"We've also found a local rosella grower who will be able to supply us for our rosella vinegar.

Mr Nicholson said rosellas are a remarkable fruit, with a flavour combining the flavours of many red summer fruits.

"You can put the fruit into a glass of champagne, or use it with tonic water for a refreshing non-alcoholic drink," he said.
