DEX NETBALL: Future is bright in the Lower River

DEX SHIELD: While Maclean High School Years 7/8 coach Cobie Stanley admitted the school had to scrounge around to fill the bare minimum in their Opens side, it looks as if the school will not have any problems in the coming years.

The future looks bright for the green machine after the school clinched glory with dogged displays in both the Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 Daily Examiner Netball Challenge finals.

The Year 7/8 led by a player of the grand final performance from Carissa Miltiadou, had to rely on their defence to overcome a willing South Grafton High side 27-24.

"I am stoked after that game, especially for these girls. They really put it all on the line out there,” Stanley said.

"We did zero training leading into this, they are just supremely talented. Any combination that needed to work on court they put it together.”

For Stanley, the success of her junior side could not have come at a better time with the school ready for the next generation of stars.

"We could barely put together an Opens division side this year, we had to scrape around for six girls, so at least this shows the school has a bright future on the courts,” she said.

It was a similar story in the Year 9/10 match with a lack of training runs not hampering the Maclean High side coached by Chloe Bryant.

"We haven't had a lot of time to work together,” Bryant said. "For them to put it all together in the final is really special.

"I knew we had plenty of strength across the court. We weren't going to be relying on one or two players.

"We just really wanted to drive onto the ball and have plenty of opportunities open to us. I didn't want the girls having to search for an open person.”

Maclean ran out 41-33 winners against Grafton High with Alyssa Luland named player of the final.
