Discover our land of contrasts

FROM the white gums of the Flinders to the rugged beauty of the Gammon Ranges, South Australia's outback is an adventure waiting to happen.

South Australia is the driest state in the driest continent in the world. It is also the flattest state on the flattest continent in the world.

But what the Flinders Ranges lack in grand proportions, they make up for tenfold in unique and rugged Australian beauty.

Two national parks have been established to protect and conserve the natural features of the landscape - the Flinders Ranges National Park and the Gammon Ranges National Park.

At the edge of the Gammon Ranges park is the village of Arkaroola, named after the giant serpent 'Arkaroo'.

Arkaroola is the starting point for Australia's most breathtaking scenic drive, following the Ridge Top Road.

Originally built as a track for mining scouts, the Ridge Top Road runs along razorback cliffs offering commanding views rarely available to the normal tourist.

Down Under Coach Tours has a 15-day Eyre Peninsula and Flinders Ranges coach holiday departing Monday, June 8 priced from $3744 per person.

This includes sightseeing of Wilpena Pound and an Arkaroola Ridge Top four wheel drive tour.

Other tours depart throughout the year.
