Divers set to join search for missing surfer

THE SEARCH for the body of missing surfer Stuart Buckley continued off Cape Byron yesterday with police divers expected to be arrive tomorrow as the ocean swell eases.

The search for the surfer who went missing on Saturday in treacherous surf conditions took to land around noon yesterday after the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter spotted what appeared to be blood on the rocks at Cosy Corner.

Five members of the Brunswick Valley Rescue group and a police officer went on foot to inspect the discovery, but the blood appeared to have come from a fish someone had caught and scaled at the scene.

The search crew did find segments of a foam surfboard on the rocks, however police inspector Bobbie Cullen said the board is not thought to have belonged to the missing traveller.

Now into its fourth day, the search would continue today Insp. Cullen said, but will be scaled down to a beach search until police divers arrive.

Officials were keeping Mr Butler's family in Australia updated and they were relaying news back to the man's parents in Ireland.

Insp Cullen thanked the volunteer rescue crews for their efforts and said it was timely to warn members of the public, especially those without experience of local conditions, not to go out into the water when the swell is so large.
