Dolls get skates on for their mates after tragedy

ON THE rink they're ruthless as they push past one another but underneath the Rum City Roller Derby Dolls have hearts of gold.

At training on Tuesday night founding member Kristin "Daisy" Freeman led the team in a fundraising effort for their comrades in Mackay, who recently lost a member to suicide.

The girls dressed in yellow and black for the session, which coincided with R U OK? Day today.

Kristin said the derby community was tight knit and the tragedy had struck a chord.

"He was a young guy, one of the refs. He was really bubbly and upbeat," Kristin said.

"It's really devastated them. It was such a shock."

She said the Mackay league was grateful for the show of support.

"They're really happy. We wanted to do it for them but also our members to show we all band together and to start the conversation. It has really upset and affected our members. You're all responsible for one another."

The Derby Dolls have a fluctuating membership but they were out in force on Tuesday with colourful wigs, bright suspenders and a determination to do the right thing for their friends.

R U OK? Day is about encouraging people to have meaningful connections and asking your mates if everything is alright in their world to stop the feeling of isolation.
