Urquhart's gold dream shattered

DONNA Urquhart’s Commonwealth Games gold medal dream is over.

The Yamba squash player and her doubles partner Kasey Brown have bowed out of the Delhi competition following a 6-11, 11-5, 11-4 loss to English pair Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro last night.

In a tough semi-final contest, both teams enjoyed periods of dominance but it was the English duo that eventually took control and won through to the gold medal decider.

Australia’s second pairing of Lisa Camilleri and Amelia Pittock was preparing to take to the court against fourth-ranked Kiwis Joelle King and Jaclyn Hawkes at the time of the Examiner’s print.

Fellow Yamba product Cameron Pilley was another to be taking aim at gold, facing top seeds Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant alongside Ryan Cuskelly.

Mixed doubles quarter and semi-finals were also scheduled to go ahead.

Top-seeded Brown and Pilley faced second seeds Duncalf and James Willstrop following the English pair’s surprise loss to Kiwis Joelle King and Martin Knight in the group stage.

The winners of that clash take on Urquhart and Palmer or Scottish pair Harry Leitch and Lisa Aitken.
