New owner to renovate historic South Grafton home
THE appearance of the historic South Grafton home, Uloom, looks a lot rosier after it sold at auction to a local home renovator, Steve Dobbs.
Mr Dobbs, who co-owns Walkers Marina Hotel with his wife Margaret McKenna, paid $305,000 at an on-site auction on Saturday.
Mr Dobbs, who has a passion for home renovation, is about to sell a property in Alice St, Grafton, he has just done up.
Mrs McKenna said her husband was at a loose end and with the sale of the just-completed home, would be able to fund the new purchase.
She said her husband had acquired a bargain at the auction, where he was tempted by the low price.
"It was going too cheap not to show some interest," she said.
The bidding at Saturday's auction was lacklustre, often progressing in increments of $1000.
Auctioneer Clint Donovan and selling agent Darren Billett, from Elders Yamba, halted the auction when bidding stalled at $282,000 to get instructions from the owners, the McGuren family.
With only two bidders interested, the price climbed slowly past to the $300,000 mark, before limping to $305,000.
Mrs McKenna said her husband has no immediate plans for the building other than to get it into shape.
"Steve's done a lot of work with these sorts of buildings," she said.
"He did all of 20 Bent St, (their home) using recycled timbers and authentic doors and windows."
Mrs McKenna said the couple are also "getting serious" about selling the hotel.
"It's been for sale for a couple of years, but we've listed it on about 10 different websites and have a booklet coming out in July," she said.
