STEVEN Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll are some of the biggest soccer stars in the world.

A former Maryborough soccer player is now helping them and their Liverpool teammates in their bid to win some Premier League glory in England.

Dr Grant Abt, who played soccer for Doon Villa before he left the Heritage City to go to university, has developed an exclusive iPad application for the world-renowned club.

It allows each player to give feedback about how they are feeling after each training session or match.

Dr Abt, a University of Hull academic, said Liverpool wanted a simple way of collecting the information from a player and he was more than happy to help.

"Previously, coaches would collect this by hand and it was a cumbersome job, with bits of paper flying everywhere," Dr Apt, who went to both Aldridge and Maryborough state high schools while he lived here, said.

"Now, the iPad is in the dressing room and whenever they are ready, players can go to it, select their name and put a score of one to 10 in.

"What is key to this is the ease of collecting the information.

"With football players it has to be easy. If it is complicated to use, they won't use it and it is pointless."

The information is instantly collated for the coaching staff who then link it with all the other data they have collected such as how far a player has run within games and muscle soreness, among others.

Dr Abt, a Liverpool fan, said helping Liverpool was something to be proud of.

"It's fantastic to be a part of," Dr Abt, who moved to England in 2000, said.

"It is just a really small part, but as every coach would say, it's the hundreds of tiny things that add up to a performance."
