Dragon boaters paddle on to State championships

DRAGON BOATS: Grafton is set to roar onto the state stage as experienced dragon boating duo Tracey Starr and Tom McKenna charge to the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith.

While it will be McKenna's first time at the state titles, for Starr it is a return to the event where she claimed two gold medals last year.

Both competitors were picked for the northern region team after excelling at the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast at the end of last year.

The northern team will compete against regional teams from western and southern districts for overall bragging rights, as well as the opportunity to represent New South Wales at the Australian championships in Wodonga, Victoria, in April.

The NSW State Dragon Boat Championship attracts teams from all corners of NSW and the races will be fiercely contested.

It is a spectacular event held at the world-class regatta centre and provides paddlers with the opportunity to compete against the best of the best in the state.

McKenna and Starr will compete Sunday.
