Driver brings down telegraph pole

THE driver of a timber truck may still be unaware of the damage he caused in Ryan St, South Grafton about midday today.

South Grafton Fire Brigade captain Dennis Pye said witnesses at the scene, on the corner of Cowan and Ryan Sts,  told him the top of the truck appeared to catch onto a telephone cable before the truck  headed west along Ryan St.

The driver appeared to be oblivious to what was happening and eventually the tension from the west-bound truck broke a telegraph pole.

Mr Pye said the brigade was initially called because of the fear the cables may have been electrical but, he said, telephone wires posed no imminent danger to the public.

Grafton police were not available for comment.
