Driver hurt, cattle die in truck rollover

A TRUCK driver was injured and five head of stock died after a cattle truck rollover at Eton.

The livestock vehicle toppled over as it turned from the Peak Downs Highway onto Homebush Rd about noon yesterday and rolled onto a block of land.

Mackay police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Mark Dwyer said emergency services from Marian, Mirani, Finch Hatton and Mackay attended the scene, to slow traffic down and eventually block the road.

The male driver was treated by the Queensland Ambulance Service and then transferred to Mackay Base Hospital with head and shoulder injuries.

Sergeant Dwyer encouraged residents to contact Mackay Regional Council or Mackay Police if cattle were seen wandering about the Eton area.

Thirty-six head of cattle were on the loose after the incident.

Investigations will continue.
