Driver plunges off Poley Bridge

AN elderly driver was lucky to escape with only slight hypothermia after he crashed his car off the Poley Bridge on Thursday night.

The driver lost control of his vehicle in light rain before swerving off the bridge on Rushforth Rd roughly 10km out of Grafton, according to Grafton police Inspector Murray Gillett.

The car fell 1.5 metres into the river before floating roughly 100 metres downstream with the current and coming to a rest in some trees.

The driver managed to pull himself free of the vehicle just as emergency services arrived.

The accident was witnessed by a driver travelling behind the crash victim who was able to phone for help, Insp Gillett said.

The driver was taken to Grafton Base Hospital for observation. He was reported to be shaken but uninjured.

A tow truck driver failed to retrieve the car, which had come to rest under dense overgrowth.
