Driveway tragedy: Father was behind wheel

A YOUNG boy has died after being run over on the driveway of a suburban home in the Moreton Bay region.

The three year-old was trapped under the reversing 4WD utility in upmarket Samford Valley, northwest of Brisbane, yesterday afternoon.

The vehicle was being driven the boy's father.

It is believed the boy ran out behind the ute, which had a box trailer on the back, at about 5.20pm.

Police and paramedics rushed to the house in Birdwood Drive to find the youngster trapped under one of the rear wheels.

They treated him at the scene but could not save him. Many were left in tears.

Senior Sergeant Darren Madgwick said the incident was a terrible tragedy.

"At the moment it appears a three-year-old boy was on his front driveway and his father was backing out a car that had a trailer attached and for unknown reasons the child has been run over and received fatal injuries," he said.

"It appears at this stage that there is nothing suspicious, however we will make further inquiries.

"The family has only been in the house for two weeks ... and they're getting family support tonight."

Officers were last night comforting the boy's parents.

"They are extremely distraught as one would be losing a child at Christmas,'' Acting Inspector Marcus Cryer said.

A neighbour told The Courier-Mail the child and his family had only recently moved into the house.

"It was sold about a month ago," the woman said.

"We saw all the emergency crews come down the street and police have it taped off.

"A firefighter came down and told us not to go any further."

The woman said she saw a moving van at the property just last week.

The forensic crash unit are at the scene investigating the incident.

The boy is the third child killed on driveways around the country this month.

On December 20, a two-year-old girl died when she was hit by a reversing car at Campsie in Sydney's southwest.

And on December 1, a five-year-old girl was killed when a reversing car ran into her on the driveway of her family home at Inverleigh, near Geelong.

There have been several similar tragedies in Queensland this year.

Toddler Mason Wright, 18 months, was run over on the family driveway in the Ipswich suburb of Brassall in July.

Hope Bunston-Parfitt, aged two, died at Blenheim in the Lockyer Valley in August.
