Learn how to eat for the season Tibetan style
TIBETAN Medicine teachings suggest that the right foods in the right season will promote a healthy mind and body.
And in spring, it's important to know what foods stimulate a healthy balance.
Australian Tibetan Medicine Association chairman Carey Idle explained the importance of eating the right foods for the seasons.
"During spring it's good to have foods with more bitter or astringent tastes," he said.
"Try and avoid sweet, salty, fried or greasy foods."
"Tibetan Medicine is about balance.
"It aims to treat imbalances in the body, and the right food is the first line of defence."
During spring there is a rise in heat that causes a decline in digestion which bitter and astringent foods will counterbalance.
Practical foods such as spinach, broccoli, lettuce, zucchini, garlic, onion and tea and coffee are a few foods you should incorporate into your spring diet as they help to promote healthy digestion.
But Carey stressed that too much of one thing could have a negative effect as well.
According to the Tibetan tradition, the proper intake of food and drink is considered to ensure good health, placing great emphasis on the correct consumption.
Carey has had an interest in Tibetan Medicine for 10 years and started the non-profit ATMA two years ago.
