Ed and Katy delivered this year’s crappiest songs

IT WAS the year that Taylor Swift killed Taylor Swift, Jay-Z apologised to Beyoncé, and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee had much of the country asking what Despacito means (it means "slowly").

But the biggest music releases of 2017 weren't always the best. Here's our rundown of the finest songs of the year, and the ones that should be banished forever.

BEST

KENDRICK LAMAR - DNA

Humble was the song that made Lamar a pop star, but DNA was the song that made him a hip-hop legend. Wielding his dense lyrics and cultural pride like flamethrowers, the bewildering speed of this track's final minute showed that the Compton rapper was untouchable in 2017.

LORDE - GREEN LIGHT

Doleful breakup anthems are a dime a dozen, but with Green Light the New Zealander captured that moment of excitement that comes with preparing to turn the page. It's surprising that this brilliant dance-pop track wasn't a bigger hit - only reaching No. 19 on Billboard's Hot 100 - but just be thankful it exists.

SELENA GOMEZ - BAD LIAR

Achingly hip Talking Heads samples, witty references to the Trojan War, and Gomez's most assured vocal to date combined to make an unexpectedly brilliant single from the starlet.

KHALID - SHOT DOWN

Location really put Khalid on the map, but the yearning, soulful beauty of Shot Down truly showed what the one-time army brat could do. You had to be cool to spot his talents in 2017, but everyone will know about him soon enough.

SAMPHA - (NO ONE KNOWS ME) LIKE THE PIANO

Most songwriters would give their left arm to write a song about another human as tender as this one about a hunk of wood and some ivory. But most songwriters aren't nearly as talented as this breakout star of British R&B.

WORST

ED SHEERAN - GALWAY GIRL

The British singer-songwriter committed many atrocities this year, but this hodgepodge of borderline-offensive Irish cliches was just about the worst.

MARIAH CAREY AND YOUNG THUG - I DON'T

It was meant to restart Mimi's music career, but this powder-puff attempt at trap music succeeded only in restarting the ridicule that she's already endured so much of. We love you, Mariah, but why do you do these things to yourself?

KATY PERRY AND MIGOS - BON APPÉTIT

Generic dance-pop with a guest spot from the Georgia rappers that makes it obvious they were there strictly for the money. A low point in Perry's already disappointing year.

JAKE PAUL - IT'S EVERYDAY BRO

For the uninitiated, Paul is a bratty YouTube star who decided to release a hip-hop song and video about the joys of being a bratty YouTube star. Hellishness ensued.

MORRISSEY - SPENT THE DAY IN BED

On this snoozy ode to living life in a shell, the indie legend's gift for lyricism is absent. Instead, he seems to crib from a middle-school rhyming dictionary. "No bus, no boss, no rain, no train." Spent the Day in Bed sounds like he did exactly that.
