Dragon Boat Race to go ahead
THANKS to a heap of last-minute support, the 2010 Dragon Boat Race will go ahead on October 24.
This time last week Clarence Community Events Inc representative Dawn Collison had to deal with the possibility of calling the event off due to a lack of paddlers and sponsorship.
In the space of a week, the team nominations have grown from 10 to 27, which is something Dawn is very happy about.
“The last-minute support has been great,” she said.
“We have made some behind-the-scenes adjustments to cut costs a little bit so the event can definitely go ahead now.
“Hopefully next year we will have a bit more support earlier on so we don't have to contemplate calling the event off.”
While the event has been confirmed and a range of entertainment has been booked, Dawn said any last-minute sponsorship would be wonderful.
“While nominations for boats have closed, we would be happy to welcome any last-minute sponsors with open arms.”
With this Sunday locked in as the date, Memorial Park in Grafton is set to have a carnival-like atmosphere.
“The day is going to be loads of fun. We have a heap of stallholders and activities for the kids as well as a good variety of entertainment. And then you have the races as well,” Dawn said.
The Cass Hollingworth Drumming Group will take to the stage on the day as well as Kyarran and Kyonomiya.
A cool jazz vibe will be brought to the river bank thanks to Sofalatido who will be playing a mix of covers and original tracks.
Mama Lala will display their fusion rock/folk talents and Simone Smith and Yet to Be will also entertain.
