Students to shelter Haiti homeless

RESPONDING to the incomprehensible tragedy of the Haiti earthquakes, the first of which struck the Caribbean nation on January 12, Maclean-based exchange student Rebecca Caster has set up a bank account to receive donations for survivors.

“The money is going to go to shelter boxes ... they contain supplies which will each save the lives of 10 people,” said the 16-year-old American.

Rebecca said she came across a Facebook page entitled Exchange Students for Haiti which called on exchange students around the world to actively support the nation which has already lost more than 200,000 lives to the catastrophe.

She wrote a letter to The Daily Examiner explaining her position: For the survivors of the life shattering quakes in Haiti, everyday is a never-ending battle to survive.

Simple things that many of us take for granted, like having a place to sleep, having the people you care about around you safe, having food to eat, or just having basic clean water to drink, are things that the people of Haiti desperately need to be able to survive. The problem though, is that without support from everyone, many of these people will never get these basic essentials.

Exchange students all over the world are donating their time and money to raising awareness to help supply relief to the many thousands of sick, hungry and homeless in Haiti. This group of exchange students is nothing more than that, a group of students. We are a group of teenagers, from all around our world, who recognised a need for change, and banded together to do their best to bring a better and brighter future for those in Haiti, and we’re asking for your help in doing so.

Any amount of money could save the life of a daughter or son whose life has been threatened and destroyed because of the disaster. You could give them a fighting chance at survival, a chance to live.

Please, if you could find it in your heart, donate whatever you can to the people of Haiti and give someone’s child and their family a chance at life.

Donations can be made the Rotary Club of Maclean’s Commonwealth Bank trust account. Details are: BSB 062569, acc # 10159271 and include the reference ‘Exchange Students for Haiti’.
