Expansion on track for 2011

THERE were no bulldozers or builders queuing to start work on promised operating theatres at Grafton Base Hospital when Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon made a brief visit yesterday.

But those keen to see the multi-million dollar facility started would not have been too disappointed.

Ms Roxon, accompanied by the Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin, North Coast Area Health Service chief executive officer Chris Crawford and Grafton Base Hospital Medical Staff Council chairman Dr Allan Tyson yesterday toured the hospital and inspected draft plans for the $18 million plus facility.

Ms Roxon said the estimated completion date for the facility was still 2011.

“Our plan is to develop a facility that will serve this community well for the next 10 to 20 years,” she said.

She said the Commonwealth was committed to spending the $18 million it had promised for the facility, but if more money was needed 'we will talk to the State about that'. Planned talks with State Health Minister John Della Bosca would include issues about Grafton Base Hospital.
