Fabulous Baker boys rope rivals

IT is a good thing there is no such offence as an RUI – Riding Under the Influence – or Grafton duo Adam and Cal Baker could be in trouble.

The brothers, who now live in Singleton, celebrated in true Australian style after starring performances at the ABCRA National Finals Rodeo in Tamworth on January 20-24.

“We got drunk,” Adam frankly said of the pair’s post-competition party.

Earlier the 21-year-old clinched the final two rounds of the rope and tie event.

His 22-year-old brother, a tyre fitter, already had cause for celebration after taking out the overall gong throughout the series.

Fifteen of the nation’s best young riders were on show at the finals, but it didn’t stop Adam from taking a positive attitude towards the competition.

“I went there pretty confident that I could do pretty well,” he said.

“But you never know with that sort of event. It was just some fun.”

Adam collected $650 for the win but said there were other prizes just as valuable to be claimed.

“ I do it because it’s fun and for the money and the women,” the plant mechanic said.

“My dad was an Australian champion and he got us into it.

“We just rodeo every weekend through the year.”

A steady training regiment involving ‘lots of horses and lots of cars’ helped prepare the Baker boys for the event.

“Practice makes perfect,” Adam said.
