COMMENT: Facts lost on smokers

COMMENT Feb 25, by David Moase, The DEX editor

WOULD you take up a habit that will:

  • Cost you more than $1000 a year.
  • Increase the chance you will suffer an early death.
  • Cause you to have to leave the room every time you want to indulge.
  • Make you smell to the extent everyone around you notices when you walk into a room.

But that is exactly what smokers do, even though they know all those things.

I'm not sure what goes through smokers' heads when they read figures like those on Page 6 today - 66% of Clarence Valley smokers have an early death sentence - but it can't be happy thoughts.

For those who are established smokers the challenge to give up can be difficult. Nicotine addiction remains hard to kick despite all the incentives and help available.

The fact young people, knowing all of the above, still take up smoking is, however, plain staggering.

Even if the thought of death seems fanciful, every young adult I have met is money conscious. Why they set out on a path that is costly and probably fatal beggars belief.
