Family looks to future after fire

FIRE destroyed her Waterview Heights home just over a week ago, but Michelle Tobin is counting her blessings.

Michelle and her partner Rod escaped with their three children Josh, 14, Bailey, 10 and Chloe, 8, after fire engulfed their Grevillia Street home last Sunday night.

The fire destroyed their car and Michelle's scooter along with most of the house and possessions.

Michelle said she was just glad the family got out alive.

“The firefighters really were fantastic,” she said.

“We live 10 minutes out of town and they were here in less than 15 ... it wasn't until afterwards we realised they had been in and managed to cover-up some of our stuff.”

Tod managed to salvage the family's computer and photos, while the children's school materials were also recovered.

For the past week, the family of five has been living at Michelle's mother's home while waiting for insurance claims to be processed, and hope to move into a new home this week.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Over the weekend, Michelle and Tod enjoyed one bright moment in their dark week, attending V Festival on the Gold Coast after winning a competition in The Daily Examiner.
