Smiles Cafe voted number one in the Valley, by you

SMILES Cafe co-owner Rachael Kendell says if you own your cafe you are willing to go the extra mile for your customers.

Smiles Cafe has been voted most popular cafe in the Clarence Valley in The Daily Examiner's Facebook poll.

Nominations were taken from our Facebook followers and the top 10 were then entered into a poll.

"Owning your own cafe is better than working for the man," Mrs Kendell said.

"It's yours, you go the extra step to make the customer happy."

Mrs Kendell said they always came in with a happy attitude.

She said it took her until Friday to realise Smiles Cafe was nominated for the poll.

"I didn't realise, thank you to the community and everyone who voted."

Mrs Kendell said another great part of working at the cafe was most of the staff were in the family.

She works with her mother-in-law Carole Kendall, 16-year-old daughter Julie Kendall, 18-year-old-son Jordan-Kendell and husband Nathan Kendell.

They also employ Jo Hotteef as part of their team.

Jordan said it was a different experience working with his family.

"When you're coming into a friendly environment it is easy to do a good job for the customer," he said.

"The location at the old Coles (Grafton Mall) is wonderful. You get a lot of frequent customers you see every day."

The Kendells started in the cafe in January, 2014 and have gone from strength to strength.

Mrs Kendell said people were starting to know where they were.

"Now it is getting busier and busier."

Smiles cafe won 23% of the vote, ahead of Heart and Soul on 19%.
