Fashion dealer in vintage form

WHEN Janel Morrissey was 18 years old she asked her parents for a wrought-iron bed instead of a birthday party.

That was the first sign of the Alstonville resident's love for "old things", a passion that has continued throughout her life.

Mrs Morrissey will launch Australia's first speciality vintage fashion auction house - Wisteria Auctions - next month.

She hopes to hold four auctions per year, with the first one scheduled for November 6 in Sydney.

The former accountant said she began buying and selling vintage clothing and accessories in 2003.

"When I had my third child I wanted to do something at home and sell things online," she said.

"I saw on eBay that vintage was selling quite well.

"The accountancy gave me good business skills, but I have always loved old things.

"This was what I really wanted to do. This is my passion."

Mrs Morrissey went to a vintage auction at Bexhill where she picked up her first collection of treasured items, including a travelling trunk with a collection of Edwardian-era clothing.

Her favourite finds include a collection of 1920s evening and day dresses, a 1940s nylon cream blouse and a 1920s velvet purple evening jacket.

"Modern clothing does not touch me the way vintage does," she said.

Mrs Morrissey said the current trend in vintage clothing had depleted the availability of it in Australia.

She hopes the auctions will help replenish vintage stock.

The entire auction catalogue is available online and bids can also be placed online.
