Woman in her 60s, killed in Mummulgum car crash

THURSDAY 11.10AM: A WOMAN in her 60s was killed in a fatal head-on crash on the Bruxner Highway at Mummulgum on Wednesday afternoon.

Lismore police Inspector Susie Johnston said the woman was driving her Subaru east along the highway between Tabulam and Casino about 3.40pm when she collided head-on with a westbound Toyota Hilux towing a trailer.

"On a bend approximately 1km east of Theresa Creek Road there was a collision between the two vehicles," she said.

"The woman, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

"The two men in the Toyota Hilux, who were able to free themselves, were suffering neck and back injuries."

Insp Johnston said the two men were Mummulgum locals.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the two men, one aged 55 and the other in his early 20s were assessed at the scene by paramedics and placed in cervical collars.

They were both taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition, the spokesman said.

Insp Johnston said police from the North Coast Crash Investigation Unit were examining the scene to try to determine the cause of the collision.

Police are yet to release the woman's name, Insp Johnston said, as her family haven't been notified.

A report on the incident will be prepared for the coroner.

THURSDAY 7.30AM: TRAFFIC is still affected on the Bruxner Highway at Mummulgum following a fatal car crash yesterday afternoon.

Live Traffic NSW is reporting that traffic is still affected in both directions, with portable traffic signals in place until further notice.

The head-on crash between two cars occurred about 3.50pm yesterday afternoon, 2km east of Mummulgum.

 

WEDNESDAY 5.40PM: DRIVERS heading on the Bruxner Highway between Mummulgum and Casino are advised to avoid the area completely.

Road diversions are only suitable for 4WD vehicles coming from Casino along Bulmers Road on to Bay Road then Hogarth Range Road which rejoins the Bruxner Highway west of the crash.

Motorists heading east along the Bruxner Highway take the same diversions in opposite order.

Due to heavy rain, please be aware this is not suitable for regular or heavy vehicles. Best to avoid the area.

WEDNESDAY 5.20PM: TWO men travelling in a car involved in a fatal head-on crash on the Bruxner Highway at Mummulgum have been taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman confirmed both men were suffering serious neck pain.

Both men, one aged 55 and the other believed to be in his early 20s were assessed at the scene by paramedics and placed in cervical collars.

They were both taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The Bruxner Highway remains closed in both directions and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

WEDNESDAY 4.55pm: POLICE have confirmed a person has died in a serious two car crash on the Bruxner Highway near Mummulgum.

The incident occurred about 3.50pm two kilometres east of the town.

The highway will be closed in both directions for some time while crash investigators examine the incident.

 

WEDNESDAY 4.45PM: EMERGENCY services are on the scene of a serious two-car crash at Mummulgum.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to reports of a two-car crash on the Bruxner Highway about 2km east of the town of Mummulgum about 3.50pm.

Paramedics are assessing two patients at the scene both suffering serious neck pain.

One man is believed to be in his late 50s and another man believed to be in his early 20s.

The condition of a third patient involved in the crash is not known.

Police and NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers are also on the scene.

The highway will be closed in both directions for some time.
